It has officially become open season for starting jobs on the Dolphins’ defense, with one position confirmed to be up in the air amid search for answers

The Miami Dolphins' defense has been the team's most fatal flaw through the first six weeks of the 2025 season. Miami has struggled in essentially every phase — the list of metics and statistics in which they're not in the bottom 10 in the league is likely shorter than the list of stats in which they area. Miami ranks in the bottom five in the NFL in: points allowed, yards allowed, scoring possession percentage, interceptions, yards per carry, net yards per attempt, third down defense, and fourth down defense.

But hey — who is counting?

It seems as though Miami is. Because we're seeing some personnel changes take shape — and Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver confirmed on Thursday that at least one starting position has become open season for a competition.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver confirms the Dolphins have an open competition at cornerback

"I think you guys saw how (cornerback) Ethan (Bonner) was playing in training camp. He was very close to potentially earning a starting spot. I love what Jack (Jones) has done. I think both of those guys could play well for us in spots. We’ll continue to let them battle it out throughout the week and let the reps sort themselves out," said Weaver on Thursday.

The potential transition from Jones to Bonner at cornerback is notable for where Bonner, in theory, can win and the time on task he's had in the system. Remember, Jack Jones arrived in Miami the first weekend of training camp. Bonner has been with the Dolphins for several years and was a part of Weaver's install in 2024.

Miami Dolphins' cornerbacks who have started a game in 2025

  • Cornerback Storm Duck (Injured in Week 1)
  • Cornerback Rasul Douglas
  • Cornerback Jack Jones
  • Nickel defender Jason Marshall Jr. (Injured reserve)
  • Nickel defender Cornell Armstrong (released)

Bonner has always been a player who has gotten hype during the summers, but his actual body of work is incomplete, to say the least. In getting 16 snaps against the Chargers, Bonner tied his entire 2024 NFL season total for defensive snaps. He logged 23 as a rookie in 2023.

At this point, Bonner is more of a promise of something different than he is to be considered an actual and definitive solution. But Miami's opposite corner, Rasul Douglas, has played well in 2025. So why not take a look at Bonner amid the continued absence of Storm Duck and Miami's best corner, Kader Kohou. Duck is expected back, while Kohou will not return this season.

Bonner serves as Miami's latest shuffle in the secondary and, hopefully, can be their first answer.
