The Washington Commanders needed to make changes after a lackluster performance in their loss to the New England Patriots, and that's exactly what happened.
Head Coach Dan Quinn spoke before practice on Sunday and told the media that they would improve roster positions where they could, and even tried out 14 players after practice. Following the tryouts, a recent fifth-round pick was released, and other roster moves were made.
The Commanders didn't like what they saw on film following Friday's preseason game , and one player who stood out the most in a negative way was 2024 fifth-round pick Dominique Hampton. Hampton was released from the team Monday morning, along with others on defense.
We have made the following roster moves:
— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) August 11, 2025
- Signed CB Essang Bassey, CB Antonio Hamilton Sr. and LB Duke Riley
- Released DE Viliami Fehoko Jr., CB Allan George and LB Dominique Hampton
- Placed T Lucas Niang and CB Kevon Seymour on the Reserve/Injured List pic.twitter.com/mvEIHQoPaZ
Hampton played safety at the University of Washington, but was transitioned to LB when he got to the Commanders. The move to linebacker just hasn't gone well, and it really showed on film against the Patriots when he was pushed out of plays, and couldn't be physical enough against backups.
It's disappointing to see a recent fifth-round pick get released this quickly, but this just shows why quality over quantity is the way to go in the draft. Get the players who can stick around for the future, and not just fill out a roster spot. Hampton had physical traits worth taking a flyer on, but the writing has been on the wall.
The Commanders also released DE Viliami Fehoko Jr. and CB Allan George. Subtractions lead to additions, and the Commanders have also added three players in CB Essang Bassey, CB Antonio Hamilton Sr, and LB Duke Riley. Riley adds depth the the linebacker position and special teams, and he is Hampton's direct replacement.
The depth in the secondary looked rough as well, and they also lost Kevon Seymore to an injury. Antonio Hamilton Sr. is a veteran player who has bounced around several teams the last few seasons, and Essang Bassey is a 26-year-old who could probably stick on the practice squad.
This gives them time to make an impression in practice and the two remaining preseason games. At least the team saw what the weakest links were on the team, and decided to make changes immediately while there was still valuable time. I don't think the team is finished making moves, and we will see what else needs to be addressed before the season starts.
