Head coach Brian Schottenheimer isn't revealing the cadence the Dallas Cowboys will be using now that he will be calling plays. But if you put two and two together, it sure sounds like there will be a significant change. And it's one even casual fans will immediately notice.
While not many fans know exactly what the cadence is—the short sequence of words and numbers a quarterback uses to time the snap—some become iconic for certain players. That was Prescott's case between 2023 and 2024 when he yelled "Here we go!" before snapping the ball.
Soon enough, it became a T-shirt phrase, a soundbite in commercials teasing the upcoming games, and content creators even called the 2023 offense the "Here we go offense." Well, it sounds like Prescott's "Here we go!" era has come to an end.
To be clear, none of it is confirmed but Schottenheimer's response to a question about the cadence potentially changing on Thursday's press conference provoked a noteworthy response.
"I'm not going to tell you about the cadence, but the biggest thing with the cadence, I will tell you, is getting a guy like Joe (Milton)—and now you've got new linemen, you've got (Tyler) Booker, you've got Rob Jones, you've got guys like that—is getting all the quarterbacks to kind of sound the same," Schottenheimer explained to reporters.
Schottenheimer admitted that while it sounds pretty simple, it's important.
"It's the guys that are the backups that have to learn to make their cadence sound like Dak," the Cowboys head coach added with the hint of a smile. "That's kind of one of the things that you do work on in terms of the cadence and what we say and things like that. Maybe you guys will hear it today, maybe you won't."
The reason why Schottenheimer bringing up that specific aspect of the cadence is that last year, Cooper Rush's cadence sounded noticeably different than Prescott's. And unlike most cadences, Prescott's "Here we go!" yell had a very particular rhythm to it. All cadences have pace and yes, some rhythm, but the extended "go!" at the end might be more difficult to replicate.
If the Cowboys head coach believes the "biggest thing" about the cadence is for it to sound the same no matter who is under center, the cadence is likely to change.
We will find out for sure soon enough when more practice clips begin to emerge, but if I had to bet, the "here we go!" cadence is no more.
