The Philadelphia Eagles looked pretty smart after Will Shipley went down and general manager Howie Roseman made a trade for the Jaguars' leading rusher, Tank Bigsby, in 2024. The Eagles sent a 2026 fifth and sixth round draft pick for Bigsby, who was primed to provide a versatile option for the defending champs that targeted both backfield depth and could give a special‑teams impact under the NFL’s revamped kickoff rules.
It seemed like a reasonable move for both teams as the Jaguars earned draft capital without "bog down" rookies like Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen. The Eagles also acquired an insurance policy for Shipley, who has plenty of experience, along with a receiving option to spell Saquon Barkley, especially since A.J. Dillon is the only other option for Philadelphia. Since Bigsby's debut with the Eagles, it seems that Roseman was misled, as the running back has failed to find his footing with his new team.
Bigsby has yet to take an offensive snap for the Eagles, in addition to only playing in 29% of Philadelphia's special teams plays. Going into the Week 6 matchup against the New York Giants, Bigsby has totaled seven kick returns for 150 return yards, averaging 21.4 per return. So far through five weeks, NFL returners are averaging 27.5 yards per kickoff return.
In addition to being below the league's average, Bigsby has struggled with reading kicks (specifically the Rams game), which was magnified during the first half against the Giants, in which Bigsby misfielded another kickoff, backing the Eagles up at their own seven, during the second quarter.
Bigsby's lack of consistency may lead to him being a healthy scratch moving forward. With Shipley healthy and the Eagles even putting Dillon as a returner (who ironically muffed a kickoff as well), it appears that the team is actively trying to find a solution.
The Eagles do have Xavier Gipson on their active roster, who Philadelphia claimed after being waived by the Giants last month. With the Eagles looking for answers on what to do with Bigsby, Gipson may quickly and effectively provide a solution.
