That 2022 season was a really fun one for the Detroit Lions. From Hard Knocks during the summer to the big turnaround to beating the Packers at Lambeau and ending Aaron Rodgers' time in Green Bay. It was the beginning of a new era, and it seemed like Jamaal Williams would be a part of it forever.
That didn't happen. The Lions and Williams could not come to terms on a new deal the following March, and then the Lions signed David Montgomery in free agency and drafted Jahmry Gibbs in the first round. Williams wound up signing a deal with the New Orleans Saints. It did not work out for him there.
A year after leading the league in rushing touchdowns and rushing for over 1,000 yards, Williams became the second banana to Alvin Kamara and ran for just 306 yards. 2024 was even worse, with just 164 yards. There have been questions about whether or not the Saints just didn't use him correctly because of the stark dropoff with no injury issues ot blame it on.
Williams is now a free agent, and he's been going around the league working out for a few different teams. Over the weekend, he worked out for former Lions OC Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears, but no deal was done. Then on Monday, he worked out with the Miami Dolphins. Perhaps the Lions could be the next team to bring him in for a workout if he doesn't sign with the Dolphins.
It wouldn't be that big of a stretch. The Lions have been working out running backs all summer long and have brought in Kye Robichaux, Jabari Small, Jacob Saylors, and Deon Jackson. Is it crazy to think they'd work out one more guy in Williams?
He'd be less likely to get signed as the Lions seem to be gearing themselves more towards a younger player, and if he did get signed, he'd have a very hard time making the 53-man roster with Gibbs, Montgomery, Craig Reynolds, and Sione Vaki holding down the roster spots. Still, a workout never hurt anyone. We'll see what happens. It wouldn't be shocking if it did.
