It’s Learn, Then Lead for Steelers Rookie Zach Frazier
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Center is naturally a leadership position along the offensive line, with the pivot typically making the calls and making sure th rest of the unit is on the same page. Judging by the Pittsburgh Steelers 2024 depth chart, rookie center Zach Frazier sure looks like he’s poised to step right into the starting lineup this fall, with a big role on the offense and along the line.

But as far as that leadership role, he’s just taking things one day at a time after officially starting his NFL journey with the Steelers. Wearing his new No. 54 Steelers jersey, Frazier took to the practice field and worked out with his new teammates. To no surprise, Frazier appeared to fit in with the rest of the rookies.

“I’ve just been trying to observe as much information as I can and learn as quickly as possible,” explained Frazier about studying Pittsburgh’s playbook to prepare for minicamp.

On how much more complicated an NFL playbook is to what he’s accustomed to from his college career, Frazier brought how it’s more detailed but he has noticed some similarities to what West Virginia asked of him.

“There’s similarities and differences and everything,” he said. “Some stuff, it’s football, but yeah, there’s definitely more detail in the playbook. … Same type of plays that we had in college – wide zone, inside zone, gap. Same plays everywhere, pretty much. So feel confident in doing that.”

Regardless of the playbook, one big difference for Frazier is that he’s going from being a leader throughout high school and college to being new and needing to establish himself on a new team.

“I think it’s my job to, you know, take care of myself first and make sure my all of my ducks are in a row before I start leading others.” Frazier said.

But he’s already taking a leadership role in some ways. He drove fellow rookie linemen Troy Fautanu and Mason McCormick to practice on Friday. The three are staring a place to stay for this camp, but only the Fairmont, W.Va. native brought his own truck.
