It's not even training camp but Chiefs look ready to send one veteran packing

When the Kansas City Chiefs brought in Justyn Ross in the 2022 offseason, it felt like a sneaky good signing. Ross looked to be on his way to a first-round selection in the draft but a spinal disorder prevented that from happening.

Ross went undrafted in 2022 and ended up in Kansas City but a foot injury held him out for the entire season. His first glimpse of action in the NFL was in 2023 where he appeared in 10 games and made one start, catching six passes for 53 yards. His second year of NFL action saw Ross get targeted only once in two games but failing to haul in that catch.

It won't surprise Chiefs fans to hear that Ross could be at the end of the road with the team (and in the NFL). The Chiefs have continued to give him opportunities to make the roster but this year there's more competition that could keep him off the final 53-man roster.

Justyn Ross will have his work cut out for him making the Chiefs' final roster

The locks to make in at wide receiver are Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, and Xavier Worthy, who will be the starting trio. The depth pieces will likely be rookie fourth-rounder Jalen Royals and seasoned vet JuJu Smith-Schuster and then there's probably going to be one spot remaining.

That spot could go to Ross but guys like Skyy Moore, Tyquan Thornton, and Nikko Remigio will all by vying for it as well. Remigio has a strong chance to make the team thanks to his return ability on special teams, so that's another check mark for one player and a strike against Ross.

It also wasn't a good sign for Ross and his future with the Chiefs that, in two seasons where the Chiefs struggled had at wide receiver, he was still unable to make an impact. Those were his chances to show what he could do and he didn't step up.

While Ross could still end up on the practice squad, the dream of him becoming a regular contributor for the Chiefs probably needs to die. If it didn't happen in the two years where the Chiefs were the thinnest they've been at wide receiver in the Patrick Mahomes era, it's probably not going to happen now that there's actually solid depth.

The Chiefs took a chance on a player who looked to still have some untapped potential but, unfortunately, it didn't work out.
