It's not even training camp but Commanders signing already has one foot out the door

Adam Peters will have a good lay of the land regarding the Washington Commanders' roster heading into training camp. And one recent acquisition might already have one foot out of the door.

Peters isn't afraid to admit when he's wrong. Almost everything he's touched has turned to gold since joining the Commanders, which saw the franchise go from the NFL's basement to the NFC Championship game in just one year. Even so, the general manager won't hesitate to pull the plug on experiments he brought to the organization if they aren't up to the required standard.

One of the biggest objectives outlined by Peters this offseason was raising competition across the board. Most who gave so much to the cause last time around are getting another chance to stake a claim, but the slate has been wiped clean. Everyone is looking forward, and anyone not pulling their weight will be shown the door.

It's the hallmark of every successful franchise. And it's been a long time since the Commandera adopted this elite-level mindset.

Eddie Goldman faces a fight to make Commanders' roster this summer

That raises the stakes for new signing Eddie Goldman. The Commanders acquired the run-stopping interior defensive lineman on a one-year deal this offseason. He's a formidable presence at 6-foot-4 and 338 pounds, but his production for the Atlanta Falcons was inconsistent at best in 2024.

Goldman's also missed a lot of football over the last few years. He opted out of the COVID season and retired for two years after the 2021 campaign before returning in 2024. That should mean he's relatively fresh compared to most 31-year-olds in the trenches, but it could still legitimately go either way.

Others will also fancy their chances of attaining rotational roles behind the top defensive tackle trio of Daron Payne, Johnny Newton, and free-agent signing Javon Kinlaw. The likes of Sheldon Day, Jalyn Holmes, and Carl Davis Jr. all flashed promise when reps came their way in 2024. They've also got the coaches' trust and scheme familiarity on their side, which makes life more difficult for Goldman in pursuit of a roster spot.

It would be surprising if Goldman didn't do enough to make it. The Commanders see something in the player they believe can help them, but proving it when the tempo increases at camp is the only way to guarantee his spot.

Anything less, and several others are breathing down his neck with similar ambitions.
