Robert Tonyan, who signed with the Chiefs' practice squad late during the 2024 season, has quietly had a good training camp.
He is looking to secure the No. 3 tight end role behind Travis Kelce and Noah Gray. While speaking to the media following Tuesday's practice, Tonyan praised both Kelce and Gray for how well-ingrained they are in Kansas City's offense — particularly Kelce as he is in the late stage of his career.
"I've known Travis for a couple of years, but being here and seeing how he practices, how he prepares, and maintaining his body," Tonyan said about observing Kelce. "He probably has the most snaps amongst any tight end in the last 10-12 years with how far the Chiefs go in the playoffs every year, and obviously the Andy Reid camps. He's taken a lot of wear and tear, but he's able to rejuvenate and get ready for the next day.
"With how much he does the day before, it's pretty incredible. He practices hard. I've loved learning from him over the years. When I was with Green Bay (Packers), you see his film, and you don't really get it, and then you get to ask him questions, and then you see where his mind's at, and it's awesome. Learning from him and Noah, they're both just two great players, and learning what Coach (Andy) Reid likes, what Pat (Patrick Mahomes) likes, and then just put in my little flavor on it as well."
Tonyan joined Kelce at Tight End University earlier this summer, and it appears the work he has put in is paying off. Entering his ninth NFL season, Tonyan is looking to revive his career after a few down years that have included multiple injuries. He has some noteable success in the league, including in 2020 when he tied with Kelce for the most receiving touchdowns among all TEs with 11.
