To the surprise of no one, the outpour of love hasn't slowed in the days following the passing of former Ohio State and New York Jets center Nick Mangold. A leader in the locker room and the community, Mangold was one of the more beloved players and teammates across both leagues. On Tuesday, Mangold's Ohio State teammate, Bobby Carpenter, showed a special set of notes about the team's most popular players.

Both Mangold and Carpenter played under head coach Jim Tressel, another revered man known for his warmth and dedication. According to Carpenter, Tressel kept notes on every senior's training camp speeches. He acquired those notes from 2005 and shared them in a post on X.

Here's a blast from the past and a wonderfully heart-warming post from Carpenter.

Former Ohio State stars show love to Nick Mangold in wake of passing

"It’s the Brotherhood… always has been and always will be," Carpenter captioned the notes that included what AJ Hawk, Mangold, Carpenter, and others had said to the team. Take a look at the fundamentals, heroes, issues faced, and what playing at Ohio State meant to the leaders of that team.

Carpenter carved out a memorable career at Ohio State from 2002 to 2005, becoming one of the most respected linebackers of the Jim Tressel era. Known for his physicality, versatility, and leadership, Carpenter played in 50 games, starting 26 of them. He amassed 191 tackles, 14.5 sacks, and 23.5 tackles for loss, along with three interceptions and seven pass deflections.

As a freshman in 2002, Carpenter contributed to Ohio State’s BCS National Championship run, playing in every game. By his junior year in 2004, he was a full-time starter and finished second on the team with 93 tackles. His senior season in 2005 was cut short due to a fractured leg suffered on the first play against Michigan, but he still earned second-team All-Big Ten honors and was later selected in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

Carpenter was part of a legendary linebacker corps that included A.J. Hawk and Anthony Schlegel, often cited as one of the best in college football. His aggressive style and ability to play both linebacker and defensive end made him a key figure in Ohio State’s defensive dominance during his tenure.

Beyond his on-field achievements, Carpenter’s time at Ohio State was marked by deep friendships, none more profound than his bond with teammate Nick Mangold. Mangold, a fellow Buckeye and future NFL All-Pro center, was known for his warmth, humor, and loyalty. The two shared years of camaraderie both in Columbus and later in the NFL.

Following Mangold’s tragic passing in October 2025 due to complications from kidney disease, Carpenter penned a heartfelt tribute that highlighted the depth of their friendship. “Nick never knew a stranger,” Carpenter wrote. “Any bad day was instantly better when Nick asked you to bring it in for the real thing. His approachability and connectability endeared him to everyone despite his demonstrative stature”.

Carpenter described Mangold as “the eternal optimist” and “a connector in the locker room,” emphasizing that their friendship never waned despite time or distance. “It’s like hopping on a moving train when you see Nick,” he said. “Your friendship and connection never waned. It’s why we all loved him”.

Their bond exemplified the brotherhood that defines Ohio State football. Carpenter’s tribute resonated deeply with Buckeye Nation, reminding fans of the enduring relationships forged on the field and the lasting impact of teammates like Mangold.
