Jackson Meeks makes case for Lions roster with fantastic preseason performance

The Detroit Lions have been searching to see if any new weapons will emerge during training camp, and thus far Jackson Meeks has become an intriguing option to catch the ball for the offense.

Meeks has impressed at times during practice, but didn't make a huge case for himself in the Hall of Fame game. Perhaps all he needed was one week to settle in at game speed. In Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, Meeks showed up early and often.

After dropping a pass in an early series, Meeks came into his own when Kyle Allen took over at quarterback in the second-quarter. His first pass was a 68 yard deep bomb in which Meeks got behind the defense and showed off his speed.

Following that play, Meeks helped the Lions to a lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Allen found him on the goal line for an easy walk in touchdown, capping off his hard working night with his first career score.

Cracking the full-time roster at wide receiver will be difficult for Meeks considering all the names ahead of him, but there is always a chance. The practice squad could also offer him a great opportunity to break through in the event of an injury or the need for additional reinforcements this season.

Given his three reception, 78 yard performance, it's safe to say Meeks has taken a jump to be firmly on the radar of the Detroit coaching staff. Where he goes from here is anyone's guess.

Za'Darius Smith gives Meeks a shout-out after performance for Lions

One of the more interesting subplots of Lions camp has been whether the team will look to add another veteran defensive end. Smith is one of the top names available, and it could merely be a matter of time before he rejoins the roster.

There could also be a natural attachment for him to join the Lions now, because he's related to Meeks. Smith was watching the game closely, and was clearly happy to see Meeks playing well. He sent a message of support on X encouraging his nephew to "turn up."

If Meeks is able to make the Lions and Smith returns on a new contract before the season, it would be a fantastic story for the franchise. It would truly be a family affair in the case of this duo, and at a pair of the more important positions on the field.

Though it could be a long shot for Meeks to crack the roster, he has certainly put the franchise on notice with this very impressive showing.
