The Washington Commanders are keeping a close eye on one of the top HBCU prospects ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Jackson State safety Robert McDaniel has been drawing significant interest from the Commanders, with the team recently holding a private dinner with the standout player. This marks a continuation of their strong interest, which dates back to the HBCU Combine and extended through McDaniel’s pro day.

At 6’2” and 207 pounds, McDaniel’s combination of size and athleticism makes him a versatile and physical presence in the secondary. In the 2024 season, he racked up 30 solo tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions, and 4 pass deflections, showcasing his all-around impact on the field. McDaniel also registered 3.5 sacks, proving he’s not just a coverage specialist but a defensive playmaker.

McDaniel’s athleticism was on full display during the HBCU Combine and his subsequent pro day at Jackson State. He posted a 4.55-second 40-yard dash, with a blazing 1.56-second split in the first 10 yards, highlighting his quick burst off the line. His vertical leap of 39.5 inches and a broad jump of 10’11” demonstrate elite explosiveness, while his 3-cone drill time of 7.13 seconds shows off his agility and ability to change direction smoothly—a crucial trait for any safety at the next level.

The Commanders’ private dinner with McDaniel isn’t just a formality—it’s the culmination of a steadily growing interest from the franchise. McDaniel’s performance at both the HBCU Combine and his pro day caught the attention of scouts across the NFL, and Washington has kept tabs on him since. With McDaniel’s ability to play multiple roles in the secondary, from covering receivers to rushing the quarterback, the Commanders could be looking to add another versatile player to their defense.
