Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson is already enjoying their biggest offseason upgrade
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars, recognizing the need for improvement, focused their efforts on the offensive side of the ball. The most pressing issues were the need for a stronger receiver corps for Trevor Lawrence and a more robust offensive line, as Lawrence had faced excessive hits in 2023.

The team, demonstrating its commitment to change, made a significant alteration in the offensive line, a move that promises a more protected Lawrence in the future.

You wish they had made more, but they did address the biggest issue on the offensive line in the center last season. Luke Fortner was simply not getting the job done. So, the Jaguars signed veteran and former Buffalo Bills center Mitch Morse.

The Jaguars secured Morse on a two-year, $10.5 million deal this offseason. They are acquiring a player who has excelled as a pass blocker for the Bills and is renowned for his exceptional leadership. Head coach Doug Pederson is already witnessing the dividends of this upgrade, and we're only in phase 3.

"Again, just a veteran leader, someone who brings a lot of experience in that position and to that group," Pederson told the media earlier this week before OTAs kicked off. "Been really good with Luke [OL Luke Fortner]. Those two have been working extremely closely, obviously, and Mitch has been a great resource for Luke, and it's been good.

"That's what you want to see out of veteran players, same with [OL] Brandon Scherff. He's another one with some of the young offensive lineman that we do have."

Morse has watched the Jaguars and Pederson from afar for a while now. He's been a fan, and his previous relationship with Pederson, dating back to 2015 as a rookie with the Kansas City Chiefs, certainly helps.

"The culture, we [the Bills] got absolutely smacked last year in London and I've been a big fan of that defense for a very long time, as well as the offense of course," Morse said when he was signed. "I think this league is a quarterback-driven league, and to win in this league, you have to have a quarterback with the tangibles and the intangibles.

"I think Trevor [Lawrence] kind of embodies both of those things. So, that and the sunshine doesn't hurt, right? Being able to get the joints lubed up a little and feeling my fingers in November and December, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy my time in Buffalo. It was home for so many years. The only thing I have to say is that it is a little warmer here, so we're looking forward to that."

From what Pederson has said, Morse fits in perfectly. This offensive line has some veteran pieces that should help bring it all together this season, too, with Morse, Scherff, and Robinson. Will Morse alone fix all of the issues they had last season? I don't think so. But I do think the unit will be significantly better.
