Jerry Jones just dropped some news that had Cowboys fans doing double-takes at their nachos. After watching his defense get torched for 450 yards by Russell Wilson (yes, that Russell Wilson), “America’s Team” owner announced they’ve signed Jadeveon Clowney. Talk about perfect timing—like ordering pizza right when you realize you’re starving. Will he improve the defense?
The Cowboys desperately needed this move. Their defense looked about as effective as a screen door on a submarine against the Giants, giving up deep balls in the fourth quarter like they were handing out Halloween candy. Clowney isn’t going to magically transform them into the ’85 Bears, but he brings something they’re sorely missing: legitimate pass rush experience.
The former No. 1 overall pick has bounced around more than a pinball lately, four teams in four seasons, but there’s still gas in that tank. Last season with Carolina, Clowney managed 5.5 sacks in 14 games, which might not sound spectacular until you remember the Panthers’ defense was basically a suggestion rather than an actual unit.
Let’s address the elephant wearing a star-spangled helmet in the room. This signing comes after Dallas traded away their defensive superstar, Micah Parsons, to Green Bay following what can only be described as contract negotiations that went sideways faster than a shopping cart with a wonky wheel.
Clowney isn’t Parsons—nobody is—but he’s a three-time Pro Bowler who knows how to make quarterbacks uncomfortable. At 32, he’s not exactly a spring chicken, but in a league where Tom Brady played until he was older than some coaches, age is just a number that hopefully still comes with some quarterback-hunting instincts.
The Cowboys are sitting at 1-1 after that heart-stopping overtime win against New York, and they’ve got Chicago coming up next week. If Sunday taught us anything, it’s that this defense needs all the help it can get. Clowney won’t solve everything—Wilson still threw for enough yards to circumnavigate Texas—but he adds depth to a unit that looked thinner than gas station coffee.
Cowboys fans should feel cautiously optimistic. Clowney has 58 career sacks and knows how to find the quarterback when it matters. Whether he can recapture some of that magic in Dallas remains to be seen, but at least Jerry Jones is trying to plug the holes before the ship takes on too much water.
