The Jacksonville Jaguars kicked off their 2025 training camp with a bold developmental plan for rookie standout Travis Hunter: working him at both wide receiver and cornerback.
Head coach Liam Coen confirmed Hunter will practice exclusively on offense at first, then defense, before eventually flipping between both sides during the same session, within the first six camp practices.
Hunter made his defensive debut on Day 3 of camp, following two days of offense. He logged 47 snaps on defense during 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 periods while continuing to take team snaps as a receiver. Through four practice days, he totaled 83 snaps, 36 on offense and 47 on defense, highlighting the coaching staff’s deliberate plan.
“Processing both playbooks in real time is a challenge,” Hunter said. “When I’m on defense and the offense shifts strength or changes the play, I need to know my assignment immediately. They’re promoting balance, starting on one side, building toward integration.”
At Colorado, Hunter routinely practiced two-way every day. Now, Jacksonville is approaching it more methodically, first offense, then defense, and later a blend of both to prevent cognitive overload. Coaches note that managing his schedule, mapping every minute of his training time, is logistically complex but necessary for maximizing his rare talent.
Hunter has embraced the load. He remains focused on mastering two distinct roles and proving doubters wrong. Jaguars teammate Louis Rees‑Zammit emphasized that no college experience matches the intensity of doing it in the NFL, but Hunter’s mindset and approach suggest he’s up for the test.
As camp continues, all eyes will be on how Hunter juggles offense and defense under Coen’s fluid, deliberate plan. If successfully executed, he could become modern NFL history’s first true two-way star.
