Jaguars' Doug Pederson is already reaping the benefits of hiring new DC Ryan Nielsen this offseason

Last season was terrible for the Jacksonville Jaguars as a whole. However, a lot of the problems came from defense as well. Neither side of the ball was innocent, and with that, the Jaguars thought it would be a great idea to make a change.

With the start of their offseason, the Jaguars took a decisive step towards revamping their defense. They parted ways with defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and his staff, signaling their intent to bring in fresh leadership on that side of the ball. Their search led them to Ryan Nielsen, a seasoned coach from the Atlanta Falcons, who was ready to make a move to another team with Raheem Morris taking over as the new head coach there.

Nielsen has a completely different personality than Caldwell, and so far, it seems that he is the right man for the job.

"Yeah, gosh, he's an outstanding guy with the staff," head coach Doug Pederson said earlier this week before OTAs. "Defensively, just getting those guys prepared and introducing his scheme and his philosophy to the defense and then preparing the players. What I've seen during phase two, there's a lot of teaching and coaching going on that these guys need.

"I think just the way that he approaches each day as just a learning opportunity and a teaching moment. I'll tell you this, now he loves mixing it up with the players. He'll get in there and demonstrate an individual drill or fall on a loose ball fumble, whatever it might be he doesn't mind getting dirty so that's pretty cool."

With him as the defensive coordinator last season, the Falcons played man defense 58.3% of the time, which was the third highest in the league. Just so you can see how different that is compared to Caldwell's defense, the Jaguars played man defense just 31.8% of the time, 31st in the league. So, this will be a much different defense than we saw last season.

The Jaguars needed a change, and it's nothing against Caldwell, but a change was needed. Really, you could say they needed one on offense more than defense, but Pederson won't fire Press Taylor, the offensive coordinator because it's still his offense Taylor is calling. Nonetheless, the Jaguars made a change, and it sounds like it was very much needed and the right one.
