The Jacksonville Jaguars entered Monday night's game at the unbeaten Buffalo Bills badly needing a bounce-back performance coming off two straight losses to open the season. Jacksonville instead suffered a brutal 47-10 defeat that could spark some interesting conversations within the organization.
As ESPN's Michael DiRocco pointed out, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson suggested after the game he's open to anything that might fix his club, including the benching of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
"There has to be changes, whether it's play design, personnel, everything," Pederson said. "Everything's on the table, let's call it, and those are all things that I have to look at, we have to look at as a staff and make the adjustments."
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted on Monday night that Pederson could be on the hot seat considering the Jaguars have lost eight of their past nine games going back to last season. Team owner Shad Khan probably doesn't love that Pederson is already being noncommittal about Lawrence's lineup status considering the 24-year-old signed a five-year contract extension worth up to $275M with $142M fully guaranteed this offseason.
With that said, Lawrence has now lost his last eight starts and seems to be lacking confidence playing under Pederson. Following Jacksonville's Week 2 18-13 home loss to the Cleveland Browns, Lawrence acknowledged that he and his offense "suck right now." Against the Bills, he completed 21-of-38 passes for 178 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
"The quarterback has to play well every week to give yourself a shot to win, and I don't feel like I've done that consistently enough, so I put that on myself, and I've got to play better," Lawrence said, via DiRocco.
According to Pro Football Reference stats, Lawrence ended Week 3 ranked 25th in the NFL with a 43.1 adjusted QBR, 26th with a 75.1 passer rating and 30th with a 52.8% completion percentage on the season. He tossed two touchdown passes and one interception over Jacksonville's three defeats.
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 0-3 Jaguars as six-point underdogs for this coming Sunday's matchup at the 2-1 Houston Texans.
"No one's coming to save us," Lawrence added during his postgame comments on Monday night, per Jeremy Bergman of the NFL's website.
The fact that the Jaguars may need a savior so soon after Lawrence signed his deal could be enough for Khan to show Pederson the door if Jacksonville's Week 4 game at Houston's NRG Stadium gets ugly.
