Jaguars HC Doug Pederson provides an update on Christian Kirk after a brutal injury to end last season
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars, despite enduring a season riddled with injuries, showcased remarkable resilience. Franchise QB Trevor Lawrence battled through four different injuries, and the team also had to cope with the loss of Christian Kirk in a freak accident. Jamal Agnew, Devin Lloyd, and a few others also faced crucial time off.

The absence of these pivotal figures took a toll on the Jaguars, particularly in the latter part of the season. This was a significant factor among the myriad of reasons that saw the team's fortunes plummet from the heights of the AFC to a mere game or two away from playoff contention. It had to be a tough pill to swallow for the Jaguars after having the magical season they did in 2022, which saw them win a playoff game.

The absence of Kirk, the team's top wide receiver and a player who effectively opened up the middle of the field, was keenly felt. His injury was a significant blow to an already struggling offense, and his presence could have made a substantial difference in the team's performance.

Earlier this week, the Jaguars started OTAs, and head coach Doug Pederson was asked how Kirk is coming along now after almost making it back for the last game of the season last year.

"He looks healthy, he looks strong," Pederson said earlier this week. "No setbacks with him, so he's right on track doing everything. He looks really good. You know, veteran leadership in every room is key, especially in that one because we do have some young players in there."

In 2022, Kirk finished with a career-high 1,100 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Last season, he played five fewer games and was on pace for very similar numbers. The Jaguars offense is undoubtedly better with him on the field, and you just hope that one of Trevor Lawrence's safety blankets is healthy in 2024. So far, he is.
