Former Clemson Tiger Trevor Lawrence is entering a pivotal season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and head coach Liam Coen is seeing exactly what he hoped to from his quarterback this spring—though it’s not about highlight throws or flashy stats.

It’s footwork.

In a recent interview during organized team activities (OTAs), Coen gave some revealing insight into where Lawrence has made his biggest leap, pointing to the quarterback’s lower-body mechanics as a sign of real progress.

“I think his footwork has drastically improved,” Coen said. “The drop of a quarterback is very similar to a dance. And so each song, right, has a different rhythm. Each play has a different rhythm.”

It’s a unique way to look at the position, but it speaks to the precision and consistency Coen is demanding. For a quarterback like Lawrence, who’s now working deeper into Coen’s system, refining timing and rhythm is critical—not just to executing clean throws, but to commanding the entire offense under pressure.

“When the game is being played, we know it’s lived in the gray,” Coen added. “But we’re trying to create black and white lines for footwork, for reads, for timing. Because when things start moving, oftentimes, you have to revert back to your fundamentals.”

This offseason, Coen isn’t tracking whether Lawrence completes every single throw. He’s looking for command—of the pocket, of the huddle, of the offense.

“Is he operating the offense at a high level? Yes, he is right now,” Coen said.

It’s a meaningful endorsement of Lawrence’s growth heading into Year Four—especially in a season where Jacksonville expects to contend and Lawrence is looking to silence critics after an up-and-down 2024 campaign. If footwork really is the foundation, the Jaguars believe their franchise QB is dancing to the right rhythm at just the right time.
