Jaguars to hire former Chargers HC Mike McCoy as QBs coach, per report

Former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy has been tasked with leveling up the play of the Jacksonville Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence. According to NFL Network, the Jaguars are hiring McCoy as the team's new quarterbacks coach.

The hire is one of the first for the Jaguars since naming Doug Pederson the team's head coach earlier in February.

McCoy, 49, spent four seasons as head coach of the Chargers, but was fired after the 2016 following back-to-back losing records for the team. He then returned to the Denver Broncos, where he was previously offensive coordinator, and served in the role again for one year. In 2018, McCoy was hired as offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals, but was fired after only seven games with the team.

In 2019, McCoy interviewed for the Jaguars' offensive coordinator job, but the team instead hired John DeFilippo for the role. Now he'll join the Jaguars three years later, albeit in a smaller role.

Lawrence was the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but finished his rookie year with 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.
