Jakobi Meyers trade rumors get doubled down on

If no one knew any better, they would think the New York Jets love taking swings on discontented Las Vegas Raiders receivers.

It happened with Davante Adams and last season and, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, there is a chance the Jets will look to do the same with Jakobi Meyers. Meyers, who requested a trade from the Raiders after contract negotiations stalled out, would give the Jets a proven option to their receiving room outside of Garrett Wilson. However, the Raiders would have that exact same problem if they trade Meyers too soon, so it is hard to see one materializing.

That might not stop the Jets from trying, and a new trade proposal suggests exactly that.

A recent offer is likely not enough to get Meyers out of Las Vegas.

Sports Illustrated’s Thomas Carelli was the first to try his hand at making a deal, having the Raiders send Meyers to the Jets in exchange for fourth-round rookie cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers and a fifth-round pick. The pick could turn into a fourth if incentives are met,  but Carelli did not specify what those were.

“By making this deal, the Raiders will save the cap hit that Meyers commands. He is currently worth about $15M on the cap this season. Unfortunately for the Raiders, as Meyers is an expiring contract, they cannot get a haul back, but they get something,” Carelli wrote.

Even if Meyers is not a long-term piece for the Raiders, it is hard to see them letting him go for that kind of return.

The Raiders have already indicated that they view Meyers as too important on offense to move, so the price is already inflated due to that. Even then, it is hard to see this package from the Jets being enough to get a deal done. Stiggers does have some intriguing traits and a unique background coming from the Canadian Football League, but the Raiders are in the market for a more proven option at cornerback.

The Jets could keep pushing to get a deal across the finish line, but they will have to come up with greater value to make it happen.
