Jalen Carter could be in line to break an NFL record after the 2025 season

One of the best draft picks the Philadelphia Eagles have made in the last two decades has to be selecting a defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

The impact Carter has made on the Eagles' defense over the last two years playing in Philadelphia was instrumental in the team winning the Super Bowl in February. His play helped him convince the Eagles to act early and pick up his fifth-year rookie contract option that will guarantee him $12.9 million in 2026.

Another couple of seasons of pure dominance from Carter could result in Philadelphia coughing up a lot of money for the 24-year-old defensive lineman.

Carter's wallet will get a lot heavier in the near future

CBS Sports writer Tyler Sullivan recently wrote an article on the top candidates for contract extensions for every NFL team. Carter was the man for the Eagles, as he will be in line for not only a new deal in the future but one that could come at a price for Philadelphia.

"Carter already had his fifth-year option picked up by Philadelphia, so he is tied to the organization through the 2027 season. However, he is extension-eligible after the 2025 season. Through two seasons, the Eagles defensive tackle has established himself as a menace along the defensive line. While helping Philly win Super Bowl LIX, Carter was a second-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in 2024. Next offseason, Cater will turn just 25 years old, setting him up to land a contract extension that could very well make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league."

Two years in Philadelphia have already shown that Carter has been one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL. He has accumulated 75 tackles, 25 quarterback hits, 20 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, six pass deflections, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery returned for a touchdown in 32 games. Carter was the runner-up for AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and was a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro last year.

His defensive tackle partner, Jordan Davis, has already been highly regarded as the best young duo in the league. They both should find themselves in Eagles uniforms for a long time.

Carter's contract ends in 2027, but a new deal could likely be agreed upon sometime next season. His new contract will most likely be one of the most expensive by a defensive player in NFL history.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa is the NFL's highest-paid defensive player in history with his $190 million contract. Kansas City Chiefs' Chris Jones is the highest-paid defensive tackle with his $158 million deal.

Carter should be in line to make more than Jones and might even hit the $200 million contract with his next deal. For the Eagles, it would be worth every dollar as he shows a ton of potential.
