Jalen Hurts' rough Eagles training camp practice will bring out the haters

Oh boy. Let the overreactions and haters' comments begin.

In one of the rare times during the offseason and training camp, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts looked human and didn't have his best practice. 94 WIP Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks shared his commentary on Hurts' practice on day four of training camp, which details where he missed the mark by giving him a C- grade.

"Even though he completed 16/20 of his passes Hurts was not super sharp on Monday

Hurts threw his first interception of camp on a pass that was badly underthrown. Hurts looked like he threw it off his back foot and the pass was about a yard or two behind AJ, allowing Quinyon to pick it off pretty easily. Last year Hurts went 305 throws without an interception. This year it took only 63 throws

The offense didn’t do great in situational football. Hurts was “sacked” on a 4th down play by Ojomo. On a red zone snap Hurts ran the ball in for a TD but ideally you’d want the offense to have someone open and not have the QB run it from 5 yards out

The coverage on the day seemed to be really good by the defense which cause Hurts to hold the ball deep into the snap multiple times

Hurts did have a few nice throws, including a pass to Goedert over the middle for about 20ish yards. The pocket was crowded with a blitz coming but Hurts stood tall and made the pass

Hurts has definitely cooled off since the first two practice. Completing 93% of his passes wasn’t sustainable but the ball is definitely hitting the ground more than it was to start camp"

What to make of Hurts' rough practice

There have definitely been some bumps and bruises along the way, particularly in the last two practices for the Eagles, but it doesn't mean the world is falling apart. Only having four incompletions out of 20 passes is still as stellar as it gets.

The negatives are, yes, Hurts can't be throwing interceptions, but he only threw five last year, so it's bound to happen. Taking a sack on fourth down is also not ideal, but he rebounded with a touchdown run. Shorr-Parks wanted a touchdown in the red zone, but it's not uncommon for Hurts to play it safe and run it himself, especially when he has a ridiculously strong lower body.

A major topic during training camp has been the interpretation of statistics being shared during the camp, with some, like J.J. Watt, advising against reporting on them. It's true that they shouldn't read too much into it, since it's only practice, but some will use it as a weapon to prove that Hurts is an "overrated" quarterback.

Similar to the regular season, there are good days and there are bad days. Hurts didn't have a great day, but his mental toughness is what separates him from the rest of the NFL quarterbacks. He will bounce back.
