Jamaal Williams Still Hoping For NFL Opportunity

Williams spent the first four seasons of his career with the Packers, where he eventually settled into a secondary role behind Aaron Jones. He caught on with the Lions ahead of the 2021 season and split carries with D’Andre Swift during his first year in Detroit.

He had his most productive season in 2022, which also coincided with Ben Johnson’s first year as offensive coordinator. Williams finished that year with a league-leading 17 touchdowns while compiling 1,139 yards from scrimmage. That performance earned him a three-year contract from the Saints, but he only lasted two seasons in New Orleans, collecting 470 total rushing yards in 27 games. He was released during the 2025 offseason and hasn’t found another job.

Williams showed ability as both a rusher and a pass-catcher throughout his career, and he could presumably still contribute as a bottom-of-the-depth-chart weapon. On the flip side, the 2026 campaign would represent his age-31 season, and teams are surely valuing developmental options as they fill out their rosters and practice squads.

Williams likely faces an uphill battle to find another NFL gig. However, the RB remains optimistic, and he had a message for those players who are currently unsigned.

“This is for the free agents,” Williams said. “If you know you can still play, please keep playing. Play until you know you can’t play anymore. This game is not forever. Play with respect, love the game, love yourself, and just don’t give up on yourself if you know you can make it.”
