30 targets, 289 receiving yards, 17 receptions, and just two touchdowns have defined Jameson Williams' season so far with the Detroit Lions. The versatile receiver, who just received an extension with the team this past offseason, has been a bit of an afterthought in offensive coordinator John Morton's offense this season.
With Jahmyr Gibbs getting a much larger role in this offense, and with Jared Goff hitting his go-to man in Amon-Ra St. Brown most often in the air, Williams has been the odd man out. He's still providing a critical role for the offense, acting as one of Detroit's best blockers, but you can't ask a weapon like him to just block for runners and not feed him, as well.
Williams is obviously growing frustrated with this being his new role, and headed into the bye week, he's opened up a new can of worms for Morton's offense with his latest Instagram posts.

Gibbs saw more receiving yards than Williams in Week 7, which isn't necessarily a problem considering they won the game. But, anyone watching knows that it wasn't the Lions' dynamic offense that led them to a victory. Their defense comprised of mostly backups shut down potential MVP candidate Baker Mayfield and his attempts to come back in Week 7.
Gibbs saved the day on offense with his legs, and so did the offensive line, but Goff struggled to locate Williams and St. Brown thorughout the night. Williams did have one reception, but it was called back on a weak OPI call. He just couldn't win.
It's hard to say why Williams hasn't had a bigger role in this offense. Gibbs is obviously such a huge piece of Detroit's playbook, and rightfully so. But, throwing some surprises into the offense in the form of, hypothetically, not just running the ball on every single first down, could do wonders. Williams could then become far more incorporated into this offense, but he's been draped consistently each week.
Morton had a fantastic Week 2 for Detroit, and the team is 5-2, so it's hard to really complain about what we're seeing on the field so far this year.
But, headed into the bye, it's clear their biggest remaining issue is how flat the offense can look at times due to a lack of explosive play calling and playmaking from Morton and Goff. Williams is built for it, so it's understandably frustrating for him to just not be a thought in Morton's mind for so many weeks at a time.
A win's a win, though, right?
