The Detroit Lions own the No. 2 and No. 32 overall picks in the 2022 NFL Draft that opens next Thursday night and theoretically could use either asset to obtain a quarterback who would spend at least some part of his rookie year sitting behind veteran Jared Goff. In recently updated mock drafts, four of five CBS Sports analysts predicted Detroit will take a signal-caller with the final selection of the draft's first round.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes said he wants to use the second pick to grab "a game-changer" and added such an individual could be a quarterback. Per Eric Woodyard of ESPN, Goff told reporters Thursday he has "no concern" if the Lions were to select an advertised future QB1 next week.
"What do I make of the talk? The talk is always just the talk. If it happens, great, I'll deal with it from there and be the best player I can be," Goff said of rumors linking his employer with to-be rookie quarterbacks. "If it doesn't, you guys probably won't talk about it again, so it's the way the media cycle works. Again, I trust those guys up top. They've expressed confidence in me so I'm excited."
The Lions hosted both Pittsburgh Panthers product Kenny Pickett and former Liberty Flames quarterback Malik Willis for predraft visits, but there's speculation Detroit may be trying to use such meetings as a way to sell the second pick to a team willing to trade up for either of those prospects.
It was last May when Goff admitted it was "a nice vote of confidence" the Lions didn't select a single quarterback in the 2021 draft. Time will tell if he'll be able to make a similar comment next month.
