At some point in the near future the Las Vegas Raiders are going to part ways with longtime starting quarterback Derek Carr, and he got some encouraging words from another quarterback who knows what it is like to have his original team give up on him.
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff told the Las Vegas Review Journal this week that a pleasant life can be in store for players who have to get fresh starts elsewhere when their first teams give up on them.
"Sometimes a really great life," said Goff.
Goff said he had a chance to talk with Carr a lot this week in Las Vegas during the NFL's Pro Bowl weekend. He said that Carr seems to be in a great headspace as he awaits word on his future.
Goff knows how big that change can be from personal experience, as his trade out of Los Angeles from the Rams to the Detroit Lions helped reignite his career.
After some up-and-down years with the Rams that saw him reach the highs of a Super Bowl berth and the lows of being traded, Goff arrived in Detroit two years ago and has become a key figure in the Lions' rebuild under head coach Dan Campbell. The 2022 season was one of the best of Goff's career and helped lead the Lions to a 9-8 record that almost saw them make the playoffs.
Carr could have a similar turnaround if he lands in the right environment next year.
Even though his 2022 season was a disappointment, especially when it came to turnovers, he has an extensive track record of being a top-half-of-the-league quarterback and putting up big numbers. If he can land on a team like the Washington Commanders or New York Jets that just barely missed out on the playoffs a year ago, he could be the piece that gets them over the top.
Carr has already said goodbye to Raiders fans as he awaits a trade or his release.
