After a disappointing 2025 NFL season, which saw everything they built in 2024 collapse, the Detroit Lions face a tough task in 2026. The NFC North team entered last season as a Super Bowl contender, but they couldn’t even make it to the playoffs.
Dan Campbell’s team still has a strong squad, but they need something more to get over the hump and play in the franchise’s first Super Bowl next year. All eyes appear on Jared Goff, the starting quarterback who played at an MVP level in 2024.
The Lions carry a lot of expectations into the 2026 season, but if Goff doesn’t elevate his game, they will likely suffer another disappointing exit.
On Tuesday, NFL insider Mike Florio issued a warning to Jared Goff. He believes that the quarterback should deliver in 2026 or the Lions will hit the reset button.
“When you are knocking softly on the door every year, there is a fatigue that sets in,” Florio said. “At some point, the fanbase will say, ‘If we’re ever going to get the thing we’re trying to get, we have to upgrade — someway, somehow.’ And no quarterback is immune from that. At some point, you’ve got to deliver.”
He added that it might not be championship-or-bust season for the Lions, but Goff must step up and at least win the division.
“You’ve got to deliver the Super Bowl berth,” Florio continued. “You don’t have to deliver the Super Bowl win, but you have to deliver the Super Bowl berth at some point. There’s a shelf-life there. We don’t know what it is, but it’s there.”
With the Chicago Bears ready to defend their division title, the Minnesota Vikings looking to bounce back and a renewed Green Bay Packers, the competition will be fierce to win the NFC North.
Detroit also made changes, including trading star running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans.
