Jaren Hall Still Has His 53-Man Doubters
Caean Couto-USA TODAY Sports

After a very strong outing against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday in the final preseason game, it seemed like Jaren Hall had his roster spot locked up as QB3. Despite the strong performance, it sounds like the Minnesota Vikings considered releasing Hall last week. At least, according to one local Minnesota Vikings’ beat writer.

Minnesota Vikings considered trying to get Jaren Hall through waivers last week

According to Ben Goessling (Star Tribune), he heard last week that the Minnesota Vikings have considered releasing Hall and trying to get him through waivers to land on the practice squad. Goessling continues saying that although he heard that last week, his strong performance on Saturday likely makes it impossible he clears waivers now.

I went back and forth on Hall for a while; a new NFL rule allows teams to use a practice squad QB as their emergency quarterback on gamedays, freeing up a roster spot for another player who might be used more frequently. I’ve heard this week the Vikings have considered trying to get Hall through waivers to the practice squad. But after the way he played in the preseason, I’m just not sure they’ll risk losing a QB they drafted and developed.

Given the rise in performance from preseason game one to game three, it seems like head coach Kevin O’Connell won’t let the young signal caller test the waivers. Although he’s very unlikely to ever be the starting quarterback on the Minnesota Vikings, given they drafted J.J. McCarthy, he could still be the future as the backup quarterback.

Jaren Hall’s outlook on the Minnesota Vikings

As of now, it seems pretty likely the Minnesota Vikings will keep Hall on the 53-man roster. He showed to much this preseason to not warrant a team to take a flyer on him through waivers. If Kellen Mond can get claimed on waivers, you sure can bet Hall will too.

Teams are always trying to improve their quarterback depth. Many teams without a true bonafide starting quarterback are always looking for quarterbacks like Hall. He’s cheap and has potential upside. Overall, it seems like he sticks around in Minnesota, but the Vikings considering releasing him last week is intriguing. Maybe he’s not a lock like we fans think?
