The Ohio State Buckeyes were well represented in April when 14 members of their national championship team were selected in the NFL Draft.
Ohio State was able to retain a boatload of talent that could have entered the NFL the previous year—instead, those players returned to accomplish what they ultimately did.
One Buckeye who faced a tough 2024 season is now set to compete for a starting job right away, protecting Patrick Mahomes. Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, someone who knows elite offensive line talent when he sees it, has been impressed by this Buckeye.
“Yeah, the one I’m looking forward to—I just gotta be honest—is that left tackle position. That was somewhat of a revolving door all season long for you last year,” Kelce said on a recent episode of New Heights. “Have you seen this kid yet? Josh Simmons, to me, watching the college tape, it was absurd.”
What Kelce said next about former Buckeye Josh Simmons is what really caught attention. The ESPN analyst compared Simmons to a pair of future Hall of Famers.
“I’ve watched a lot of these linemen coming out over the last few years,” Kelce said. “This kid—I mean, he’s the closest thing I’ve seen to a Trent Williams or Jason Peters. That next-level strength and athleticism. The only reason he fell to you guys is because of that patella injury?”
Simmons was only able to play in six games for the Buckeyes before suffering a leg injury that ended his college career. Still, over his two years in Columbus, the offensive tackle steadily improved and rose to the level of competition after transferring from San Diego State.
If it weren’t for that injury against Oregon, the Chiefs likely wouldn’t have had a chance to take Simmons with the final pick in the first round. As it stands, things may have worked out exactly as they were meant to. Simmons now has a great opportunity ahead of him.
