It is easy to say that teams win their championships because of the amazing performance from their players, due to the execution of the game plan. That game plan is set by the head coach, so maybe the credit should go to him instead. However, a true elite franchise is assembled and maintained by the front office.
In a recent ranking of NFL GMs, NBC Sports listed all 32 general managers throughout the league. Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht received the 10th-best ranking.
It is hard to say if Licht should even still be with the team, but when you bring in a living legend such as Tom Brady, it tends to turn a few heads. Brady even had this to say about Licht when he joined the organization.
"I obviously have a ton of trust and respect for Coach Arians, and for Jason Licht, and what he has done to build the team and the organization as it is now." Brady shared.
What Licht has continued to do with this team has been inspiring as well. The team he helped to build ultimately ascended to the championship in 2021. He made some key acquisitions such as Leonard Fournette, Rob Gronkowski, Ndamukong Suh and the aforementioned Brady.
He has also shown the ability to draft key contributors for his team. Some of his biggest draft picks include Mike Evans, Vita Vea, Tristan Wirfs, Antoine Winfield Jr, and Chris Godwin.
The team has won four straight division titles under Licht's watch, and has the team to continue moving forward in a successful direction. Licht may be ranked number 10 as it is today, but he should climb up this list if the team continues to reach agreements with key free agents and draft critical talent to meet the team's needs.
