Javonte Williams inadvertently lays out why huge problem with Cowboys offense will be fixed in Week 7

It wasn't exactly surprising that the Carolina Panthers ran all over the Dallas Cowboys defense last weekend. The extent of their domination was shocking, to a degree, but we entered Week 6 knowing the Cowboys had serious problems stopping the run.

What was more surprising, however, was that the Cowboys were unable to run the football effectively on offense. They entered the contest as one of the best rushing teams in the NFL. What went wrong? Cowboys running back Javonte Williams didn't sugarcoat it when asked about it leading up to a Week 7 matchup versus the Washington Commanders.

“I feel like they played a lot more physical than we did," Williams told reporters. "That’s really where it all started — the physicality, the communication, just the little things. I feel like we just weren’t really clicking.”

Physicality is about to get better thanks to Tyler Booker's return

The good news? Williams' take on the Cowboys' physicality inadvertently explains why an easy fix is already in place ahead of the crucial NFC East showdown. That's because the physicality they lacked will be improved with the return of starting right guard Tyler Booker, who is expected to play Sunday.

Backup right guard T.J. Bass has done an admirable job stepping in for Booker over the last three games but in Carolina, it was clear he was missed. In more than one rep, Bass was beaten by physical play from DT Derrick Brown and the rest of the Panthers defense. Meanwhile, the Cowboys used a first round pick on Booker because of his physicality. There is more than one play on film where it's fair to assume if Booker is on the field instead of Bass, the play's result changes completely.

Meanwhile, Booker's physicality was so good in his first three games of the season that he even went toe to toe with Giants DT Dexter Lawrence (watch in the post below). His power in a run scheme prioritizing violence and physicality will be a game changer provided he's healthy and ready to go.

Commanders will struggle vs. Cowboys' physical run game

As Cowboys analyst Iisha Morrison points out in the post below, Dan Quinn's Commanders love to run nickel personnel. The Bears' upset win from Monday had a lot to do with Chicago taking advantage of the relatively light personnel groupings.

That is something a physical duo of guards—Tyler Smith and Tyler Booker—will need to take advantage of on Sunday.

If the Cowboys can get back to running the football efficiently, it will be easier for Prescott and Brian Schottenheimer to carry a struggling defense to a win.
