The New York Giants kicked off their 2025 training camp this week and former Ole Miss Rebels start quarterback Jaxson Dart got off to a bit of an up and down start there.
Though the results were certainly mixed, head coach Brian Daboll did offer some optimism on the young first round pick as camp is set to feature some competition among Giants quarterbacks.
In case you somehow missed it, Jaxson Dart kicked things off rather early on the first day of Giants training camp by throwing a pretty bad pick-six to Nic Jones. All the social media football analysts made sure to dunk on Dart as much as possible for the next few hours, but as it turns out that was just about the only obviously poor play the former Ole Miss QB made on day one of training camp action.

Immediately following Dart's interception, he followed that up by driving down the field and throwing a touchdown to tight end Theo Johnson on a bit of an off script throw, rolling left, and under pressure (as you can see below).
Dart didn't necessarily have to make a "wow" throw to pull the touchdown off, but this kind of solid execution play was frequent for the first round quarterback.
One thing that really impressed me about Jaxson Dart at Ole Miss was his ability to make plays off script.

Exciting seeing that already show up on the first day of camp. Bad snap, under pressure, rolling left, and delivers a touchdown pass. pic.twitter.com/52Hc6BY2J3
Dart did miss a few simple throws on what looked to be miscommunications or necessary throwaways throughout the remainder of Giants' practices on day one, but he also continued making smart plays throughout 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 as well.
He made a nice touchdown play to Cam Skattebo. There was a nice throw and obvious connection between him and tight end Thomas Fidone. Jaxson Dart may have looked like a rookie at times, but despite all the hate he received for his pick-six, he performed well, giving Giants fans something to be excited about moving forward in training camp.
The question still remains. How high can Jaxson Dart climb on the Giants' depth chart in year one? And is he already on his way?
Right now, one thing is clear with the Giants QB room: Russell Wilson is the starter. He looked good to open camp this week and when asked about the quarterback situation, Brian Daboll made it clear that Wilson was the starter. However, he also seemed to suggest that Dart could climb the depth chart, surpassing Jameis Winston amid the QB competition:
"We're going to go out there and practice. The guys are going to compete...the roster will be set when the roster is set....These guys will be out here competing, but [Russell Wilson] is our starter."
Many fans and analysts have assumed that Jameis Winston would open the season as the QB2 behind Russell Wilson given his immense experience in the NFL, but that might not be the case given the ongoing competition.
Dart operated with the second team for much of OTAs earlier this summer already. He opened training camp this week working with the threes for a bit, but then shortly bumped up with the second team for the vast majority of practice. There's a real path for Dart to function as the primary backup in year one. And if Russell Wilson does falter at any time this season, there would be no reason to not give it a go with Dart given how well he's already picking things up.
