Jaycee Horn’s subtle request for Panthers to sign ex-Defensive Player of the Year

The Carolina Panthers are looking to make a splash in 2024. Carolina made a big move to trade up and draft QB Bryce Young, but they weren’t able to find success in year one. Now the Panthers have reloaded their roster via free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft and are ready to see how far Young can take them. Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn recently made a subtle request for the team to add some veteran help on defense.

During a recent interview, Horn sounded receptive to the idea of Carolina signing former veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

“Yeah, we’ve got plenty of room,” Horn said on the possibility of signing Gilmore. “That’s on them upstairs. We’ll see what they do.”

The Panthers could use all the help they can get at cornerback. Horn is their leader and depth is very thin behind guys like Dane Jackson and Troy Hill.

Earlier this offseason, Carolina decided to pick up the fifth-year option on Horn’s rookie contract. This is a huge win for Horn who has only played in double-digit games just once over his first three years in the league.

“It felt good, felt good just knowing they believe in me, seeing the work I put in,” Horn said. “Now it’s just staying on the field, controlling what I can control and playing good football.”

When Horn is on the field, though, he looks like the player the Panthers thought they were getting when they selected him eighth overall in 2021. He has two more seasons to prove them right.

“I watch tape, I know what I’m capable of and I still feel like I’m one of the best DBs in this league,” he said. “I’ve just got to be out there to show it. That’s what I’m looking forward to doing.”

The Carolina Panthers finished with the worst record in the NFL in 2023. This season does not look any easier.

The NFL released the 2024 regular season schedule last week and revealed a tough slate of games for the Panthers.

Carolina plays two games each against their division rivals, as well as every team in the NFC East (Commanders, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants) and AFC West(Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Raiders). They also face off against other fourth-place finishers from 2023.

The Panthers did not get much respect from NFL schedule makers when it comes to primetime and nationally-televised games. In fact, the Panthers are the only team in the NFL with zero primetime games in 2024. They will, however, play the New York Giants in Germany for their Week 10 matchup. If the Panthers show signs of life in 2024, then they will likely return to the national stage in 2025.

Carolina drew a Week 11 bye, which is fairly fortunate. Mid-season byes are preferred by most NFL teams, though Week 11 is slightly on the later side. It immediately follows the team’s trip to Germany.

The Germany game is the start of a rough stretch of Carolina’s schedule. After returning from their bye week, the Panthers play the Chiefs, Buccaneers, Eagles, and Cowboys all in a row.

The Carolina Panthers need to prove that they are moving in the right direction in 2024. They are still at least one season away from being viewed as a legitimate challenge in the NFC South.
