Jayden Daniels had four-word explanation for taking big risk on TD run

Jayden Daniels gave Washington Commanders fans a scare on one play during the team's preseason game on Monday night, and the star quarterback had a very simple explanation for the decision.

Daniels played one offensive series in Washington's exhibition game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. The reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year made the most of his limited opportunities.

After handing the ball off on the Commanders' first three plays, Daniels showed why he is so dangerous by rushing for a 14-yard score on what was supposed to be a pass play. He could have slid at around the 5-yard line, but he stayed on his feet and took a big hit en route to the end zone.

Commanders coaches probably would have preferred for Daniels to give himself up, especially in a preseason game. The former No. 2 overall pick was asked about that during a sideline interview with ESPN's Lisa Salters.

"I wanted to score," Daniels said with a smile.

Salters then told Daniels that "everybody in the building held their breath" on the touchdown run. The former LSU star had a good response for that, too.

"Yeah, but then after everybody cheered, so it was a win-win situation," Daniels said.

The last thing the Commanders would want is Daniels getting hurt on a preseason play. At the same time, his coaches, teammates and fans understand that Daniels' commitment to playing full speed is what makes him so great.

Starters typically do not play in the final preseason game, so Daniels is probably done taking big hits on meaningless plays until at least next summer.
