Jaylen Watson couldn’t be happier with the Chiefs' newest defensive pieces

Jaylen Watson is glad to have some reinforcements.

After a gut-wrenching loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs are back at work with one goal in mind: reclaim the NFL throne. Mandatory minicamp is underway at Arrowhead, and Watson is glad to see some new faces in the secondary to help the team try to reclaim the title of defending champs.

For Watson, who enters his fourth season as a key starter in Steve Spagnuolo’s secondary, Brett Veach's decision to invest so much at the position was a much-needed move for the long climb ahead for the Chiefs. It's the sign of a franchise ready to reload with the depth required for a title run.

The Chiefs corner spoke with reporters about the newest additions to the secondary.

Kristian Fulton was the Chiefs' first move at corner this offseason, a veteran likely to start opposite Watson on the boundary. Fulton landed a two-year deal in free agency.

“Very physical, smart player, has great energy,” Watson said of Fulton during a media session on the second day of minicamp. “The whole room loves him, so it should be healthy competition. I've been doing this for four years now, so that's nothing new. But it should be fun, and playing in the secondary, you need that depth, just so if anyone gets hurt or anything, you can have someone come in and step up and play the role correctly.”

Watson was also quick to praise the team’s latest rookie, Nohl Williams, who was a third-round grab out of Cal in this spring's draft.

“And there's no drop off, so Nohl as well. Nohl’s looking great, he's a great corner,” he said, before nodding to the full cornerback room. “Then we still have Josh [Williams] and NJ [Nazeeh Johnson]. So it’s great depth.”

Watson is the comfortable veteran in the room at this point, but that also means he's coming into his contract year. A free agency payday is ahead, but that comes with question marks about where that might take him, if away from Kansas City.

For Watson, who has worked his way up the depth chart to become a dependable starter for Steve Spagnuolo's defense, that likely means some significant security and a major pay raise in his future. However, Watson says his focus is on the task at hand: to win another ring before he enters the market.

“Just trying not to worry about that, just control what I can control,” said Watson when asked about his pending free agency. “Come out, do my part, try to help the team win, and everything else will handle itself.”

Together with Trent McDuffie, the Chiefs have perhaps more talent than at any other point in Brett Veach's tenure as GM. Watson is ready to do his part and together it will be exciting to see the secondary come together as the season gets underway.
