‘Jeopardy!’ question trolls Seahawks infamous goal-line interception in Super Bowl XLIX defeat to Patriots

Feb. 1, 2015, will forever be a day Seattle Seahawks fans would love to forget. Those watching a recent episode of “Jeopardy!” were given an unfortunate reminder.

Yes, we’re talking about that interception — the one Russell Wilson threw to Malcolm Butler at the 1-yard line with 20 seconds remaining in Super Bowl XLIX against the New England Patriots. Butler’s takeaway sealed the Patriots’ 28-24 victory over the Seahawks in one of the most memorable endings in Super Bowl history.

But for Seahawks fans, it’s a nightmare. Jeopardy! is still asking the question that was on the minds of NFL fans a decade ago: “Why didn’t they give Marshawn Lynch the ball?”

On the play before Wilson’s untimely turnover, Lynch rushed his way to a four-yard gain to put the Seahawks just a yard away from their second consecutive Lombardi Trophy. Instead, the decision was made to put the ball in Wilson’s hands. Butler jumped the route on the pass intended for Ricardo Lockette.

That was it. The Patriots were Super Bowl champions for the first time since 2004. New England would win two more championships over the next four years. Seattle has won just three playoff games since.

Pete Carroll, Marshawn Lynch relive Seahawks Super Bowl XLIX loss

So, why didn’t Lynch get the rock at the 1-yard line? Well, Lynch and then head coach Pete Carroll talked about it this past September on the “Politickin‘” podcast. Carroll took responsibility for the play call. To this day, it’s one he would like to have back.

“I would have done anything in my power to change that moment,” Carroll said. “But the moment happened too quickly. Then it was gone. It was gone before it even happened. It had nothing to do with all the storylines about some other players or some other agenda – that’s not how the game works. It happened so fast – they substitute, we do this, boom, the call is made – and it just happened. And we got smacked in the frickin’ nuts by it.”
