The attention around Rueben Bain Jr. has changed suddenly just weeks before the 2026 NFL Draft. Many scouts see him as a top defensive player and a possible first pick on that side of the ball. But now, an old story about a 2024 car accident has brought new questions about his draft position.
Reports say Bain crashed into another car in March 2024, and his vehicle then hit barriers. Three people were with him, including two teammates and a woman named Destiny Betts. Betts later went into a coma and died months after the crash. Police first gave Bain a careless driving citation, but later dropped the charge. He was not charged in connection with her death.
The timing of this story has raised concerns around the league. Some people think the details were leaked to hurt Bain’s draft chances. Sports media figure Skip Bayless has pointed the finger at Jerry Jones, but he did not directly accuse him.
Bayless shared his theory publicly while discussing the situation. He suggested that teams sometimes leak information before the draft to push players down the board. He then connected that idea to Jones and the Cowboys, who hold the 12th pick.
“Dallas picks 12th, and if I know Jerry Jones, I wouldn’t put it past Jerry to leak something like this,” Bayless said. “I’m not saying he did, but this is the Jerry I know because I was around him a lot in Dallas, and this happens all the time that a team will leak something like this when they’ve don’t their homework and research, and they’re totally cool with it.”
.@RealSkipBayless isn't putting it past Jerry Jones to have LEAKED the Rueben Bain Jr. story in order to take him at 12

Bayless described the crash as a tragic accident and noted that Bain faced no legal consequences. He also pointed to Jones’ history of taking chances on players with off-field concerns.
“Jerry has had a long list of off-the-field hell-raisers,” Bayless said. He mentioned past examples, “Even Ezekiel Elliot had off-the-field stuff at Ohio State, and Jerry took him fourth overall.” He recalled how Collins went undrafted after police wanted to question him in a separate case, only for Dallas to sign him quickly.
Bayless believes Jones could take a similar approach if Bain slips in the draft. “He’d probably love it if Rueben Bain fell to 12,” he said.
Bain’s legal situation has not changed. Betts’ family has even supported him and wished him well. Still, the renewed attention could affect how teams see him in the final days before the draft.
