In one of the biggest midseason trades he's made in years, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acquired All-Pro DT Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets before the NFL trade deadline. But on Friday, Jones changed the narrative around the trade a bit.
In a radio interview, Jones declared that he previously offered the Jets his former all-world pass rusher Micah Parsons and a first-round pick in exchange for Williams but was rejected.
NFL fans were immediately skeptical of this and so some have waited to hear from the Jets media weigh in. One of them has.
According to Jets insider Connor Hughes of SNY, no such offer was ever made to the Jets, per his sources. He said that while there was a "conversation" between ownership, talks ended when the Cowboys found that the Jets didn't have the money to extend Parsons.
"Zero doubt that Jerry said this. However this was never actually offered to the Jets, I’m told. There was a conversation between owners. It was a brief one. A Cowboys source told me the Jets weren’t ever going to the monetary value needed to extend Parsons (discussed this Week 2). Talks ended. A land where Jerry trades Micah AND a 1 for Quinnen is amazing tho," Hughes wrote.

NFL fans were quickly dismissive of the deal, pointing out that the Jets would never have turned down such an offer if it were real. What Jones wound up doing was giving up a first-round pick, a second-round pick and backup DT Mazi Smith for Williams.
The move was initially panned, but fans quickly warmed up to it thanks to the immediate impact Williams has had on the defense (the team is 3-0 in games he's played for them). Jones might simply be trying to save face by making it seem as though he wound up getting Williams for a bargain rather than as an overpay.
All is well that ends well for all parties though.
Ultimately, the Cowboys got Quinnen Williams AND got rid of Micah Parsons (as Jones clearly intended). The Jets, meanwhile, got a few high-value draft picks that can help their young general manager build his roster over the next couple of years. As for Parsons, he got to go to a new team and get a big-time contract in the process.
It seems like everyone got what they wanted in the end.
