Jerry Jones believes Cowboys can 'slay the giant,' turn season around

Even though the Cowboys season looks like it’s headed for a potential disappointment, owner Jerry Jones remains optimistic.

On Tuesday, Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas, “You can think negatively and everybody does, and that's normal. But boy, we got a lot of positive things we can do. I have seen it just hopeless, and walk out there, and David slay the giant. I've seen it done.”

Jones believes the Cowboys can save their season if they can overcome quarterback Dak Prescott’s absence. In fact, Jones has not placed Prescott on injured reserve, which would force him to miss at least four games.

The initial timetable for Prescott’s injury was supposed to be six to eight weeks, but not putting Prescott on IR indicates the Cowboys think or want him to come back earlier.

“He's very capable of coming past this injury and having a great season, a great season — I emphasize that,” Jones said. “So let's hold what we've got, get this plane kind of landed. Right now let's patch up the holes, and let's come back at it."

Patching up holes might be an understatement for the Cowboys offense after Week 1. Even before Prescott suffered the injury, they floundered against the Buccaneers.

The Cowboys averaged 3.8 yards per play, drew 10 penalties for 73 yards and were the only team in Week 1 to not score an offensive touchdown, according to ESPN.

The Cowboys face the defending AFC champion Bengals Sunday and the defending Super Bowl champion Rams in Week 5.
