FRISCO - We've long called it "Jerry Jones' Southern-Fried Little Rock Door-to-Door Salesman Gibberish Word Salad.''
And we've meant it in the nicest way.
And here we go again, with the big announcement coming late on Friday night ... in what some critics would term "news-dump form'' (as opposed to the Dallas Cowboys' usual PR bluster) .... that he's hired Brian Schottenheimer as the team's new head coach.
The Cowboys fiddled around with other ideas starting two weeks ago after "parting ways'' with Mike McCarthy. There was their fake link to Deion Sanders (speaking of PR bluster) and there were rumors about Pete Carroll, Rich Bisaccia and Mike Vrabel and there were actual interviews with Leslie Frazier, Kellen Moore and Robert Saleh before Schottenheimer took center stage.
There were two lengthy interviews with the incumbent offensive coordinator, Wednesday and Thursday, at which time it became clear that this wasn't just about retaining "Schotty'' in that same role.
Schottenheimer, 51, has a great deal of experience coaching in the NFL but has never been a head coach. In was in 2022 that he joined "America's Team" as an analyst under mentor McCarthy, and one year later - with Kellen Moore elbowed out of the way - he was promoted to offensive coordinator.
Schottenheimer, who is the son of the late NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, will be introduced to the media as the head coach of the Cowboys here at The Star on Monday morning.
So now Schottenheimer is officially the 10th head coach in the history of the Cowboys. ... and has a kooky quote from Jerry to put on his resume.
"Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant," Jones declared. "He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys."
"He ain't Brian no more''?
Long-time Cowboys watchers who are still scratching their heads over the actual hiring of Schottenheimer can now be even more befuddled at Jerry's "Southern-Fried Little Rock Door-to-Door Salesman Gibberish Word Salad'' remark.
