As Trevon Diggs works himself back from another knee injury, most of his rehab has been done away from the Dallas Cowboys facility. Enough to where the team decided to dock is pay by $500,000. A part of Diggs’ contract, news came out just before heading out West to Oxnard.
On Tuesday, Diggs gave his reaction to a sizable check coming out of his pocket. He was honest, saying it was not a move he was expecting. But in the end, there will always be an opportunity to earn some of the money back.
“I didn’t expect that,” Diggs said via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “It kind of hurt my feelings. It’s OK, though, hopefully I make it back in incentives.”
Jones himself was honest as well about the situation during Monday’s State of the Union press conference. He cited the issue being a contractual one. In Jones’ mind, Diggs did not earn the money, and the Cowboys had to take action.
“He didn’t earn it,” Jones said via Machota. “He didn’t come. That’s in his contract. … Bottom line is those are contractual things.”
Diggs missed six games during the 2025 season due to an issue with the same knee from the previous year. A torn ACL sidelined the star cornerback for all but two games in 2024. Availability has been an issue since signing a massive extension with the Cowboys.
Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News was the first to report Diggs would be docked pay. The $500,000 came out of his $9 million base salary after not attending at least 84% of offseason workouts at The Star.
For now, there appears to be no exact date Diggs expects to be back. He went on and added he is “very happy” in Dallas amid some of these tough moments with Jones. Possibly a positive sign that some of the tension will eventually smooth over.
“I feel real good,” Diggs said of his rehab via NFL Network’s Jane Slater. “Doing everything I’m supposed to do. I feel real good. I’m ahead of schedule. So yeah, feel good.”
Diggs has played in 58 games throughout his five-year career. Two Pro Bowl campaigns are on the resume, as is a first-team All-Pro for his 2021 performances. A league-leading 11 interceptions were recorded alongside two pick-sixes.
Four more years remain on the massive contract extension Diggs previously signed. Diggs will be a cap hit of just over $12.5 million during the 2025 season and will get as high as $23.3 million in 2027. Free agency does not pop up until 32 years old in 2029.
