Jerry Jones explains why Cowboys fans should believe 2024 playoffs will be different
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys‘ disappointing playoff showing sent fans’ hopes for the franchise plummeting, but Jerry Jones doesn’t want them to give up on him. The 81-year-old team owner told reporters this week at the Senior Bowl that there’s plenty of optimism that the 2024 season will end better than this year.

Jones pinpointed areas that he intends the Cowboys to be better in next season, to hopefully make it past the first and second rounds of the playoffs at least.

“What I would say is, I hope it’s not different going into the first playoff game where we’ve got the second seed,” Jones said. “Now, when we play in that game, we need to stop the run better, and be more physical and we need to run better.”

Jones’ son Stephen, the executive vice president, was blunt about how the fans should feel after nearly three decades and no Lombardi Trophy.

“We have had three good years of 12-5 and we have had major disappointments in the postseason, so until we do something about it – which is go have another great year and have success in the playoffs – that’s gonna be there,” Stephen Jones said. “There’s no way they’re going to explicitly trust you until you get it done…Until we compete at that level and we get the job done, there’s gonna be doubt and rightfully so.”

Jones: Cowboys are ‘all-in’ for 2024

Jones surprised fans on Tuesday as he claimed the Cowboys are going to be “all-in” heading into 2024. That statement alone will reel fans back in for the next few months.

“I would anticipate, with looking ahead with our key contracts that we’d like to address, we’ll be all-in,” Jones said. “I would anticipate we’ll be all-in at the end of this year… We’ll be going all-in on different people than the past. We’ve seen some things from the players that we’ll be all-in on. And yes, I would say that you will see us, this coming year, not building for the future.”

Team building has long been a theme under Jerry Jones. The Cowboys love to acquire players through the draft, watch them succeed, and reward the best with contract extensions. Jones has seen plenty of success with the method through the regular season but Dallas has fallen short in the playoffs for nearly three decades.

How the Cowboys manage to go all-in for 2024 with major deals creeping up for stars like CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, and Dak Prescott‘s nearly $60 million cap hit, will begin to come to light soon.
