Jerry Jones may not change his negotiation tactics when discussing a new deal with George Pickens this offseason.
Pickens has earned a substantial raise after tallying 92 catches for 1,420 yards and nine touchdowns in his first season with the Cowboys. The pending free agent may have to deal directly with Jones to stay in Dallas.
Jones said on Tuesday morning's weekly 105.3 The Fan interview that he plans on talking to Pickens and his agent, David Mulugheta.
"I don't know," Jones said. "We'll see how it goes. Probably both, but I certainly intend to be speaking with George."
That's probably not what Cowboy fans want to hear after the Micah Parsons debacle. The Cowboys owner and general manager controversially sidestepped the star pass rusher's agent to speak directly with the player.
Parsons requested a trade on Aug. 1, claiming Jones turned informal meetings into negotiations without his agent present. Jones thought the two parties reached a deal, but he dismissed the defensive star's demand as a negotiating tactic before sending him to the Green Bay Packers for Kenny Clark and two first-round picks.
After the blockbuster, Jones insisted he didn't break any rules by speaking only to Parsons.
"There is no violation," Jones said in September. "Period. I have all the authority in the world, and the player has all the authority in the world, to negotiate directly with me. There is no equivocation."
The Cowboys may have made the best move of the offseason when sending a pair of Day 2 draft picks to the Pittsburgh Steelers for Pickens. He's set career-highs across the board in his fourth NFL season, combining at least 130 yards with a touchdown five times.
Dallas won't make the playoffs, but Pickens garnered his first Pro Bowl nod for his role in the league's top-ranked passing offense. Jones has previously made it clear that he wants to retain the 24-year-old breakout star to keep a dynamic duo alongside CeeDee Lamb.
"I’m proud of the season he’s having," Jones said of Pickens in November. "It exceeds anything we could have hoped for."
