Jersey numbers officially revealed for Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 NFL free agency additions, including a fun throwback
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs' newest players have officially been assigned jersey numbers for the 2026 NFL season.

Kansas City introduced its three big free agent acquisitions to the media on Thursday, March 12. We already knew that Kenneth Walker III would be wearing No. 9 and that his history with that jersey number.

The Chiefs have now officially revealed the jersey numbers for DT Khyiris Tonga and S Alohi Gilman.

New Chiefs DT Khyiris Tonga is taking Dontari Poe to the next level

Interestingly, Tonga has played for several NFL teams and has worn No. 95 at each stop: the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and New England Patriots . Chris Jones wears that jersey in Kansas City, so Tonga ended up with No. 92.

What's great about that is that it takes the Dontari Poe comparison to the next level. Poe infamously wore the No. 92 in Kansas City. Virtually every reporter mentioned the fact that Tonga is a hybrid player and plays the fullback spot, something that Andy Reid did with Poe when he first arrived in Kansas City. It led to some iconic trick plays like "Bloated Tebow Pass" and "Hungry Pig Right."

Derrick Nnadi last wore No. 92 last season. Marlon Tuipulotu had it the season prior. Tanoh Kpassagnon wore it for four seasons from 2017 through 2020, and then Poe wore it from 2012 to 2016. It's generally considered a great jersey number for an interior defensive lineman.

New Chiefs S Alohi Gilman chooses a unique jersey number

Alohi Gilman will wear the No. 17 jersey in Kansas City, which is a strange choice for a defensive back.

At the Naval Academy, Gilman wore No. 1. At Notre Dame, he wore Nos. 11 and 12. In the NFL, he wore No. 32 with the Los Angeles Chargers and No. 12 with the Baltimore Ravens last season. He wore the No. 11 jersey in high school. No. 1 is currently worn by Xavier Worthy, No. 32 is currently worn by Nick Bolton, No. 11 is currently worn by WR Jalen Royals, and No. 12 is worn by TE Jared Wiley.

The No. 17 jersey was worn by Gardner Minshew in 2025. Before that, Chiefs fans will remember it as a wide receiver jersey number, changing hands among Richie James, Mecole Hardman, Chris Conley, and Donnie Avery during the Andy Reid era. Steve DeBerg was probably the most famous K.C. player to wear the No. 17 jersey in Kansas City. The only defensive back to ever wear the No. 17 jersey with the Chiefs was Fletcher Smith in 1966 and 1967, who was a hybrid DB/K.
