Jets' Aaron Glenn explains Justin Fields decision after nightmare outing in loss to Broncos

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields passed for 45 yards and took nine sacks in New York's 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos that dropped the Jets to 0-6 on Sunday.

Despite the fact that Fields looked awful as he lost his fifth start with the Jets, first-year head coach Aaron Glenn made it known on Sunday that he was sticking with Fields for the Oct. 19 home game versus the Carolina Panthers (3-3).

While speaking with reporters on Monday, Glenn expanded on a quarterback decision that may be unpopular with some members of the Jets' locker room.

Aaron Glenn defends Justin Fields after "one true bad game"

"I actually thought he did some pretty good things in those four games," Glenn said about Fields' first four starts of the campaign, per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. "In this fifth game, he took a step back. And I’m with you guys 100 percent. And we can’t have that. And he knows that. And he knows that better than anyone, you know? So, I don’t think you just try to bench a player after having one true bad game, because I thought the other games, he played fairly well."

As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk pointed out, Fields was responsible for minus-10 net passing yards on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Jets scored against Denver via three field goals and a third-quarter safety that came as a result of an offensive holding penalty enforced in the end zone.

ESPN stats show that the winless Jets rank 28th in the league with an average of 279.8 offensive yards per game and 25th with an average of 20.5 points per contest on the season. On Sunday, NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY reported that some Jets players have said since training camp that they feel backup Tyrod Taylor is the best quarterback on the Gang Green roster.

Aaron Glenn has seen "improvement" from 0-6 Jets

"Obviously, everybody wants to make sure they have a winning record," Glenn added. "...We’re trying to build a foundation of making sure that we win consistently. How do you do that?
Man, you just can’t just throw things out there and just have an unstable foundation. I do know this. There has to be improvement. And to me, I saw improvement within that game. Does that mean that we’re gonna go on this bill of winning every one of our games? No, but I know this.
It gives us a better chance to win."

As of Monday afternoon, ESPN BET had the Jets as 1.5-point underdogs for their Week 7 home game against the Panthers. If Fields and the Jets' offense hear boos during what becomes a loss at MetLife Stadium this coming Sunday, Glenn may have to make a quarterback change to prevent a locker-room revolt.
