Jets’ Aaron Glenn shows ‘growth’ when discussing Justin Fields

One year ago, Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets believed they had found their long-term answer at quarterback in Justin Fields.

That proved far from reality.

A year later, Fields is no longer with the team. The Jets were left with just two measly wins to show for the $40 million deal dished out last year.

Speaking to reporters at the NFL’s annual owners meetings in Phoenix, Ariz., Glenn took full accountability for the failed gamble.

“I put the fault on me,” said Glenn. “I didn’t do enough to put him in a position to be successful.”

While interpretations can vary, Glenn’s decision to take responsibility for Fields’s failures showcases a semblance of growth. Instead of bowing up with conviction, the Jets’ sophomore head coach put it on his shoulders.

The Jets took a chance on the 2021 first-round pick after he led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 4-2 start in 2024, hoping he could continue to improve in New York.

However, that was not the case.

He led the Jets to a 2-7 record before being benched after Week 9. Over that span, Fields completed completed 62.7% of his passing attempts for 1,259 yards, 7 touchdowns, an interception, and 4 fumbles while enduring 27 sacks.

After the first wave of free agency, the Jets shipped Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick. Better yet, the Chiefs will eat $3 million of his $10 million remaining on the two-year deal he signed with New York last March.

Now, Gang Green has found their starter for the 2026 season, and it is a familiar face: Geno Smith, for whom Glenn has high hopes, saying he believes Smith is the signal-caller to lead the Jets to the “promised land.”
