Jets Activate Joseph Ossai From PUP List

The New York Jets are getting another veteran pass rusher back on the field. The team announced Tuesday that edge defender Joseph Ossai has been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and moved to the active roster.

According to the official announcement from the New York Jets:

“The Jets have moved edge Joseph Ossai to the active roster and removed him from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.”

Ossai had been on the Active/PUP list since July 28, keeping him out of Jets training camp practices. His return gives head coach Aaron Glenn another experienced option for a defensive front that should have plenty of competition for snaps.

The Jets signed Joseph Ossai in March after he spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals. The 6-foot-4 edge has appeared in 61 games for Cincinnati, totaling 116 tackles, 44 quarterback hits and 14.5 sacks. Perhaps most encouraging for the Jets is Ossai’s recent production. He recorded five sacks in both 2024 and 2025. Last season, he also set a career high with 616 defensive snaps while adding 71 snaps on special teams.

Ossai joins a Jets edge group that includes Will McDonald IV, David Bailey and Kingsley Enagbare, giving Glenn and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks another player who has shown he can get after the quarterback. The timing is also notable. The Jets held their first joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday and will practice against Tampa Bay again Wednesday before the teams meet in the preseason opener Friday night at MetLife Stadium.

How quickly Ossai works his way into team drills remains to be seen after missing the first portion of camp. Getting him off the PUP list gives the Jets another piece to evaluate as they move closer to the regular season.
