Until the New York Jets figure out their quarterback situation and announce it to the world, speculation will keep swirling.
At least we know that Aaron Rodgers is out of the picture, but who will the Jets bring in to replace Rodgers?
Perennial QB2 Tyrod Taylor is still under contract, and some feel he might end up being the guy for 2025. Then there are others who believe New York might try to snag Kirk Cousins for the bridge QB role while drafting a guy like Jalen Milroe or Jaxson Dart to develop.
On Monday, The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt brought up another name in connection to the Jets: Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.
“The 27-year-old had a solid, if inconsistent, season with the Cardinals in 2024,” Rosenblatt said.
“His best game probably came against the Jets on Nov. 10 (he completed 22 of 24 passes). He finished with 3,851 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 68.8 completion percentage while rushing for 572 yards and five touchdowns.”
“He’s dynamic and his contract is reasonable at this stage ($18 million base salary in 2025, $22.8 million in 2026 and $19.5 million in 2027). The Cardinals would only incur a $10.7 million dead-cap hit in 2025 if they cut him post-June 1 and could replenish some draft capital — though, again, there aren’t many ready-made replacements out there for Murray this offseason, and Arizona likely wants to compete for the playoffs in 2025.”
Murray, 27, was selected at No. 1 overall in the 2019 NFL draft by Arizona after a decorated college career in which Murray won the Heisman Trophy in 2018.
Murray got off to a splendid start in his NFL career, winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 and making two Pro Bowls in 2020 and 2021.
Murray has a career passer rating of 92.4 and has tallied 19,498 passing yards, 115 passing touchdowns, and 57 interceptions in his career thus far. He's also run for 3,020 yards and scored 31 rushing touchdowns.
It seems unlikely that the Cardinals would cut a guy like Murray and go in a different direction, but then again, Arizona has only participated in one playoff game in the Murray era.
If the Cardinals decide they need a fresh start at QB, the Jets should be prepared to swoop in and give Murray a look.
