The New York Jets were scheduled to host Ty Simpson in a private workout on Friday. The quarterback arrived in the Big Apple a few days ago and had dinner with the team's executive on Thursday, sparking a lot of rumors about the Jets’ intentions toward the player.
However, the probability that the Jets will select Simpson in the first round next month is low, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. The Jets beat reporter detailed the team's draft strategy on the network’s “NFL Draft Daily” show on Friday, offering little to no chance of him landing on the team.
“I've been around the organization a long time,” Cimini said. “Based on what I know, I'd be a little surprised if they took him at 16, only because they had so many other needs. I do know this field. With three number one picks in next year's draft, the Jets do not feel like they are pressured to take someone this year. So they're going into it with that mentality.”
The interesting amount of quarterback talent expected to be in the 2027 NFL draft is a strong reason the Jets might opt against drafting one this year. With Geno Smith expected to start next season, the team has no reason to rush in making decisions about the future of the position.
Should the Jets pass up Ty Simpson and others this year, they obviously won't be short of options in 2027. The likes of Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Julian Sayin, Brendan Sorby, LaNorris Sellers, John Mateer and a host of others are expected to declare for the draft next year.
The last season's trade spree, aimed at a rebuild, has helped the Jets garner a significant amount of Day 1 picks for the next two drafts. This offers them a lot of flexibility on their route to building a team that can compete for championships.
